Live! At Genghis Cohen
Although Toni has been singing profesionally since 1961, she had never done a solo show. All that changed when she took the stage at Hollywood's Genghis Cohen on Sept. 20, 2002. Genghis was opened as a straight Chinese restaurant in 1983 by Toni's ex-husband, Allan Rinde. In 1990, as part of an overall restaurant expansion, he added the Cantina, a home for (mostly) acoustic music. Allan sold the place in 1997, which was when he traveled to Nashville and re-met and married Toni. On their frequent visits to Hollywood, they could often be found entertaining friends at Genghis (still going strong under Stella and Dennis Kiu, god bless them). Allan was never subtle about hinting that Toni should do a night there. She finally agreed.  Toni was joined on stage by Evie Sands for one number, Ron Dante for a sparkling rendition of "Sugar, Sugar," and finally, Toni and Ron were joined by Phil and Mitch Margo of the Tokens for a rendition of "Candida," which the Margo Brothers had played on. The set list included "Groovy Kind Of Love" and "Black Pearl," but the night was mostly devoted to material Toni has written in the last 10 years.
